What is Salidroside?

Salidroside is a phenylpropanoid glycoside compound predominantly found in the plant Rhodiola rosea, which is well studied for its adaptogenic properties. It exhibits a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective actions. Studies have explored its potential in treating various conditions such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), Parkinson’s disease, and cognitive dysfunction, as well as its role in protecting against oxidative stress and apoptosis in different cell types.

Adaptogenic Effects of Salidroside

Salidroside is known for its adaptogenic properties, which help the body resist physical, chemical, and biological stressors. Studies have highlighted its role in enhancing exercise tolerance and reducing fatigue, which are valuable for general health maintenance and improvement [R].

Anti-inflammatory Effects

Salidroside has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties. It modulates various inflammatory cytokines and pathways, which can help in the treatment of diseases characterized by inflammation. For instance, it has been shown to alleviate inflammation in liver injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) through the SIRT1-NF-κB pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome [R].

Studies have consistently shown salidroside’s potent antioxidant properties, making it a promising candidate for combating oxidative stress, a major contributor to many chronic diseases.  Research involving mice supplemented with salidroside demonstrated a reduction in oxidative stress markers and an improvement in the quality of aged oocytes, suggesting its potential in enhancing reproductive health and possibly extending fertility lifespan [R].

Salidroside offers protection against various neurodegenerative disorders. It has been found to enhance cognitive abilities in rats with experimental vascular dementia and shows potential therapeutic effects for Parkinson’s disease by influencing DA metabolism, neuronal protection, and glial activation [R, R].

Cardioprotective and Metabolic Benefits

Research indicates that salidroside can improve cardiovascular health and has beneficial effects on metabolic diseases. It improves glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and can inhibit adipogenesis and oxidative stress, which are beneficial in treating metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases [R].

Antitumor Effects

Although not as extensively studied as its other effects, salidroside has shown potential in exerting anti-tumor activities. This is likely due to its ability to modulate various molecular pathways involved in cell proliferation and apoptosis [R].
